Creating A Power Team to Grow Your Business

You have a strong desire to grow your business and take it to the next level, but you know you can't do it alone. You recognize the importance of trusting and depending on other professionals to assist you. What you need to do is Create A PowerTeam!

A PowerTeam is a group of professionals that you have interviewed and vetted. These professionals can range from your accountant to your web designer. They can help shorten your learning curve and speed up the process of getting things done. In other words, they can 10x your Business.

Trust is a Key Factor

I have always been the type of person to come up with incredible ideas. I'm a master at brainstorming, monetizing, and building systems. But one issue that I had was trusting others to help me. Instead, I tried to do everything myself, and although I was able to do it, I was often left feeling overwhelmed, burned out, and stressed. So, I knew that in order for me to take my business to the next level, I had to change my mindset.

A number of years ago, I was listening to speaker and business development guru, Brian Tracy. He was talking about why small businesses didn't grow. He said it was because "small business owners think small." They try to do it all themselves, and by having this type of mindset, you're not able to expand your ideas or take your business to the next level. When I heard him say that, a light bulb went off, and I realized that I was holding my business back by trying to do everything myself.

Don't get me wrong, there are times in your business when you'll have to make it happen and handle multiple tasks yourself. But if you want to grow, it's important to learn early about the power of delegation and allowing others to help you get things done.

You'll Have Challenges, But Keep Moving Forward

Of course, I had challenges to deal with, the first one being not enough money to spread around and the second was letting others help me.  But, I kept the faith, put my thinking cap on, and came up with a system to grow my business. I developed what I called the "PowerTeam," a group of professionals (many business owners themselves) with expertise in specific areas that could get things done. This allowed me to focus on being the business ambassador and work on the business, instead of always in the business.

It will take you some time to create your PowerTeam™, so it’s not just a collection of people that you put on contract.  There are several factors involved in the selection process.  First you do have to consider your budget, because you don’t want to bring someone onboard to handle specific tasks and you can’t pay them.  So you start out with just one person who can help you get some of your more complex tasks completed.  Now, you might not be able to contract them part-time, but they might be willing to work with you by the hour or on a flat fee price.

Having a greater understanding of your role as the CEO/Owner is also very important.  You might keep busy in your business, but it might be as the laborer and not as the leader. So, not knowing what you should be doing on a daily basis is common amongst micro and small business owners who are mostly Solopreneurs.

Create a detail role description for yourself as the CEO/Owner.  What reports do you need to see daily, weekly, monthly? What tasks do you need to follow up on?  What products/services do you need to revamp?  What is the sales goals of the company?  All of these are questions that you as the owner are responsible for.  Outlining what you’re suppose to be doing daily, weekly, monthly will help you stay focused.

Tips for Creating Your PowerTeam™

  1. Identify Your Needs: Start by identifying the areas in your business where you need the most help. This could be accounting, marketing, IT support, or customer service or perhaps you just need a general virtual assistant to help you keep things moving along like social media posting, research for articles, responding back to customers, updating website, etc.

  2. Seek Recommendations: Ask for referrals from other business owners or professionals you trust. Personal recommendations can often lead you to reliable and competent team members.

  3. Interview and Vet: Take the time to interview potential PowerTeam members thoroughly. Assess their skills, experience, and whether they align with your business values and goals.

  4. Start Small: Begin with a few key professionals who can make the most immediate impact on your business. As your business grows, you can expand your team.

  5. Set Clear Expectations: Clearly communicate your expectations, deadlines, and the scope of work to your PowerTeam members. Ensure everyone is on the same page from the start.

  6. Build Trust: Develop strong, trust-based relationships with your PowerTeam members. Trust is essential for effective collaboration and long-term success.

  7. Leverage Technology: Use project management tools and communication platforms to keep everyone connected and organized. Tools like Trello, Slack, and Asana can be invaluable for managing tasks and projects.
